St Joseph Cathedral Palayam - Trivandrum


This is Palayam Church as we call it. Earlier this church had a red coat. Now with million rupee renovation, it's now dawns a white look.

Restoration of St Joseph Cathedral The major restoration of St.Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral begun on 31st August, 2008. This 137 year-old Cathedral was badly in need of major renovation. This task was given to Ravi Gundu Rao and Associates, Mysore. This firm was known for undertaking preservation work of archelological monuments.

Almost all parishioner contributed to the facelift of St Joseph Cathedral. An amount of Rs 1.42 was collected as donation to this purpose from devotees and donors.



Short History on St Joseph Church - Palayam Trivandrum
The chruch was originally White and this color was changed to brick-red during the installation of bell tower in 1927.

Originally this church was established as a small parish church in 1873. It was elevated to a cathedral in 1937 and then to a metropolitan cathedral in 2004. During Pope John Paul II visit to Trivandrum in 1986, he conducted mass in this Cathedral. It was the time when it underwent major renovation work.
